Placing sensors for accurate readings

A sensor is only as good as where you put it. Good placement measures the air your product actually sits in; poor placement chases the appliance's cycles and buries you in false alarms.

Measure the product, not the machine

Mount the sensor away from the evaporator, the fan outlet, and the door. Air right at the cooling coil is colder than the shelf, and air by the door swings every time someone opens it. Put the sensor where your product lives so its readings reflect what the product experiences.

Use a buffer for stable readings

Freezers and coolers cycle constantly, and raw air temperature bounces with every defrost. For a truer picture, use a glycol buffer or an immersion probe so the sensor reports the thermal mass of your product rather than the swings of the air. This is standard practice for pharmacy and vaccine storage.

Give wireless signals a fair shot

  • Wi-Fi sensors — metal freezer walls block signal. Keep the sensor within reach of an access point, and test that it reports before you close everything up.
  • LoRa sensors — confirm a gateway is in range. LoRa reaches far, but thick walls and dense racking still cut it down.

Set thresholds after you observe real behavior

Watch a device for a day or two before you finalize thresholds and delays. You will see the normal defrost dips and door-open blips, and you can set a delay that ignores them while still catching a real excursion.
